The Western men’s basketball team won in a hard fought game against Saint Martin’s University on Saturday Feb. 4, with a score of 70-67, winning their seventh game in a row.

Rory Blanche led the Vikings with 21 points, while John Allen and Richard Woodworth contributed 14 and 11 points respectively.

The game was a close battle for the first part of the first half.

By the end of the first half the Vikings had a nine-point lead.

At one point in the second half, the Vikings had a 22-point lead over the Saints.

But Saint Martin’s had a comeback, narrowing the margin to two points.

“We made some free throws at the end of the game that helped us win,” Coach Brad Jackson said.

With 24 seconds left in the game, Woodworth made 5 of 6 free throws to help seal Western’s victory over the Saints.

“It was a battle, we let the lead slip away,” Allen said.  “But getting a win on the road is a good thing.”

Western improved to 11-1 in the GNAC and 20-3 overall.

The Vikings’ next game will be home on Tuesday, Feb. 9, tipping off at 7 p.m. against University of Alaska Anchorage.

“We hope to see a lot of fans out to support the team,” Jackson said.  “It should be one of the biggest games of the season.”
