Western’s women’s basketball team won against the Western Oregon University Wolves Thursday, Feb. 2, in Sam Carver Gymnasium.

The Vikings won 68-59 with senior forward Kristin Schramm ending the night with a game-high of 22 points and junior guard Trishi Williams with 12.

“Tonight we were really working on stopping their drive,” junior center Britt Harris said.

Although the Vikings made it a goal to stop the drive of the opposing team, the game never slowed down.

With 9:47 to go in the first, Schramm scored, bringing the Vikings’ lead to 6 points.

“We came out there to get the win,” sophomore forward Sarah Hill said.  “We played horribly against them the first time; we knew we had to step up.”

With 11 seconds left in the first half, the ball was stolen from junior guard Corinn Waltrip by Western Oregon guard Jade Haas. Haas made  one last shot, a 3-pointer, to tie the game before the first half ended. The score was 27-27.

The second half of the game started with a quick layup by Williams.

The game continued to move at a quick pace. The Vikings and Wolves tied two more times within the first three minutes of the second half.

They would never tie again as the Vikings started to dominate  play. Western led by as much as 14.

Schramm hit four straight shots for the Vikings.

“Kristin [Schramm] really led and got us fired up,” freshman center Kayla Bernsen said. “Not just with the points but with her attitude.”

Through all the acclaim, Schramm keeps her head straight.

“I couldn’t do it without them getting me open,” Schramm said. “They had great passes tonight, and we played good together.”

The final points of the game came from two Schramm free-throws.

The Vikings are now 8-3 in the conference and 14-5 overall.  Western is second in the GNAC.

Western’s next game is at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, in Carver Gym against  Saint Martin’s University.
