The article by Taylor Rubright about graffiti reported that an increase of vandalism on Western’s late-night shuttle is costing students money.
Rather than paying to improve the transportation system for Western students, the Alternative Transportation Fee is being spent on graffiti cleanup.
In my opinion, street art can be beautiful and allows the artists to express themselves. I enjoy walking downtown and seeing murals and paintings on the buildings. However, tagging the side of a bus or a sculpture on campus is not beautiful; it’s detrimental to our community.
If we’re being optimistic, maybe the people who made the graffiti simply wanted to create something beautiful but did not have the resources to do so. If this is true, perhaps these “vandals” should come forward and organize a university-wide mural project.
