Letter to the Editor: Says class iPads not worth price

I was first a little surprised by the article “A new way students can learn.” Some professors would like to use our Student Technology Fee for iPods and iPads; this would seem not to affect a very big group of students.

In my opinion, giving these two departments the requested grants is not spending our money to the best of its ability. About 15,000 students attend Western, and how many students will this really affect? How many times have you been a student and walked to the library computers and all of them were full?

An easy tool that would be a better way to help all students would be more computers. Another big question I have is where is the proof that this kind of technology propels our learning? We are in such a big hurry to get the newest and greatest thing, but are we even considering if this is an effective option? Don’t get me wrong, technology is great and we would not be what we are today without it. But there is such a push for this and we need to slow down and really see what the most effective way of learning is.
