I read Josh Holloway’s article “Campus rec center without compost” (Jan. 27, 2012) with great interest. I had the same thought as Karina Haaseth about the lack of food recycling bins when I was at the rec center last week. In fact, it was a banana peel (as pictured in your article) from a banana purchased at the Rock’s Edge Café that I needed to discard and found no food waste bin in the lobby.
Also mentioned was the paper towel composting at Haggard Hall. Is there actually a food waste pickup for Haggard Hall? Where do the custodians actually dispose of this compostable waste?
Along the same lines, Zoe’s Café generates A LOT of compostable waste, and as far as I know, there is no food waste pickup at Wilson Library or Haggard Hall.
I feel that it is fantastic to start these compost programs. But we also need to consider the logistics of how the custodians will be able to make sure the compostable items go to a food waste bin and don’t just end up in the garbage for lack of collection service or receptacles for compostable items (like the big, green wheeled totes).
Is there a way to have a “FoodPlus!” collection service from the Sanitary Service Co. at the rec center as well as Haggard Hall and Wilson Library?
Let’s follow through with this and make it a priority.
