Letter to the Editor: Says supporting gay marriage is supporting love

Love is love, and in all respect to John Lennon and Burt Bacharach, love is all “you” and the “world” really need.

Love is the most ubiquitous of all feelings. It nags at us in its absence, it plummets us into despair when it is unrequited and it attaches our feet to rockets in its completion. Marriage is just that: a celebration of a completion of two people into a whole; a closing of a chapter with the thrill of opening a new one as a pair instead of a single being. Love is at the center of our existence, and love is at the center of marriage.

Right now in the Washington state Senate, Bill 6239 is being considered. If passed, it would legalize gay marriage in Washington state. It has support ranging from current Gov. Gregoire to the Microsoft Corporation, and has attracted national media coverage.

I believe that this bill should pass for the people of Washington state because love is love. A person should be able to celebrate their love for another with no legal restrictions prohibiting them from doing so. Gay, lesbian and transgender couples should be able to embark on a new life with each other with the same privileges and freedoms as those shared by straight couples. They should enjoy the same title, the same legal rights and the same social celebrations granted to straight couples, because “we,” meaning straight, gay, lesbian, transgender, are all people who have the audacity to love and be loved.
So as this bill is debated, fought for and fought against, and you wonder if you support the legalization of gay marriage, remember quite simply: love is love, and you’ll find the right answer.
