In The Western Front, Vol. 157, Issue 1, the letter to the editor, “Before dismissing Occupy, understand it” had a few points that I did not agree with.
First of all, I would like to state that the feel to this letter to the editor was quite rude. Statements such as, “you go to a university — sound like it” are condescending to readers. Just because we attend the same university does not mean that we are necessarily educated on the same subject. That’s like telling an English major who doesn’t understand math derivatives that they should be “educated” on the subject since we attend the same college. I understand that isn’t necessarily the author’s point, but I feel like that should’ve been worded differently.
Secondly, the author points out, “demonstration is just as integral to any democracy as is voting at the ballot box.” The U.S. is not a democracy but rather a representative republic, just thought someone in college should know that.
I have a hard time agreeing with the author’s main point as well. He believes we should be educated on why citizens partake in the Occupy Movement. I just think it’s hard to understand a movement when the people in the movement themselves don’t really know what the movement is trying to solve. According to CNN’s Douglas Rushkoff, the people who partake in the movement are frustrated about the “greediness” of corporations. However, when asked what their problem is or how to solve it, answers were found inconclusive or inconsistent.
I believe the author should have enlightened us on why citizens are a part of this movement, rather than telling us that we should be educated on the subject.
