Letter to the Editor: Says green advocates should be better informed

When I keep reading articles about the continuous advancements made on campus to keep Western green, I find myself looking at these changes skeptically.  I’m skeptical because the changes aren’t seemingly that drastic, yet make me evaluate how it affects economic and environmental change.

The reduced printing quota, new spray bottles in the dining hall and new compost bins are all small changes that seem to be presented to the students who are informed just as poorly about the larger ones. You wouldn’t think compost would be a subject that students would readily object to, but the problem isn’t in the thing itself but in the lack of information presented about it.

Western flaunts a green focus and lifestyle, but many students are unaware of the decisions being made until they read about them in available mediums like The Western Front. The Associated Students Board’s information online was simple enough to find, but only the past goals and not the current actions are presented publicly.

I understand that we appoint our officials to make the big decisions for us, but when the decision is made I know voters feel more confident in their decision when we are given the answers to basic questions such as “why was this done?” and “how do I know that it’s cost effective and beneficial?”

In an era of little concern for politics and policy making, why is it that those who are curious about educating themselves seem to still struggle, despite the breadth of information presented by papers and the Internet?
